Expanded Distribution

Expanded Distribution can help you reach more readers through bookstores, online retailers, libraries, and academic institutions.

Note: Hardcover books are not eligible for Expanded Distribution.

How it works

Booksellers and libraries purchase paperbacks from large distributors. If you enroll your paperback in Expanded Distribution, we'll make your book available to distributors so booksellers and libraries can find your book and order it.

We currently work with distributors in the United States, and the United Kingdom, but booksellers and libraries around the world may purchase books from these distributors. It's free to enroll your paperback in Expanded Distribution, and it allows your book to be made broadly available outside of Amazon.

Enrolling your paperback in Expanded Distribution doesn't guarantee it will be accepted by distributors or ordered by a particular bookseller or library. The decision to list your book lies with distributors and the decision to order your book lies solely with the individual booksellers and libraries. We can't provide details on which booksellers and libraries purchased your book.

Requirements

Expanded Distribution is an option for all KDP publishers, regardless of where they live. To enroll your paperback in Expanded Distribution, it must be available on Amazon.com, or Amazon.co.uk, and meet the below requirements. If your book does not meet the requirements or our distributors don't accept your book into Expanded Distribution, we'll remove it from enrollment.

Please note the below requirements are set by our distributors’ and not by KDP. If your book is not eligible for enrollment, or if it’s removed from Expanded Distribution, there will be no impact into your KDP account status or the availability of your book(s) on Amazon.

  • ISBN: The paperback can have an ISBN you bought or one assigned by KDP. Your book's ISBN must not have been submitted for distribution through another service.
  • Content: Our distributors may not accept books according to their guidelines and policies. Content not currently accepted includes, but is not limited to:
    • Paperbacks containing frequent lined or blank pages, such as journals, notebooks, planners, calendars, agendas, organizers, or other similar works.
    • Paperbacks summarizing or providing insight into another published book without permission from the original author.
    • Paperbacks with interior pages that require a high concentration of ink to be printed.
    • Public domain content.
    • Adult Coloring books (this only applies to Expanded Distribution in the United Kingdom.)
    • Content that is poorly translated.
    • Content that is rebranded or re-released with significant changes to the metadata, resulting in a confusing reader experience.
    • Content that is excessively reused, recycled, or repeated within or across books.

Royalties

If you enroll your paperback in Expanded Distribution, the royalty rate is 40% of the book's list price effective in the distribution channel at the time of purchase, minus printing costs, applicable taxes, and withholding.

To find out the estimated royalty for a paperback you've enrolled in Expanded Distribution:

  1. Find the paperback on your Bookshelf.
  2. Under the PAPERBACK ACTIONS menu, choose Edit paperback rights & pricing. For published paperbacks, choose Edit print book pricing.
  3. Choose the territories for which you hold distribution rights.
  4. Enter a list price and see how the pricing grid automatically updates the printing cost and estimated royalty.

Learn more about paperback royalties.

Reporting and payment

Expanded Distribution sales update in KDP reports as a separate line item by each available currency for each available marketplace. Royalties for Expanded Distribution units update approximately 30 days after the end of the month in which the sale occurred. Expanded Distribution royalties are paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which our distributors report their sales.

Enroll your paperback

  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Find the paperback you want to enroll.
  3. Under the Paperback Actions menu, click the ellipsis button ("…").
  4. Choose Edit paperback rights & pricing. For published paperbacks, choose Edit print book pricing.
  5. In the "Royalty and Pricing" section, check the Expanded Distribution box for each available marketplace.
  6. When you finish setting your price, click Publish Your Paperback Book.
If you check the Expanded Distribution box but do not click on publish, the title has not yet been enrolled in Expanded Distribution. Once the publish button is selected, and the status updates to Live, the enrollment process has begun.

Refer to the information below for timelines after enrolling.

Timelines

After your paperback is accepted in Expanded Distribution, it can take up to eight weeks for the book to become available for booksellers and libraries to order. Enrolling your paperback in Expanded Distribution doesn't guarantee it will be accepted by distributors or ordered by a particular bookseller and library.

If you change your book details, content, or pricing, it can take up to eight weeks for the information to update through Expanded Distribution. Your book will still be available, but it will have the previous information until the information is updated.

Expanded Distribution doesn't reflect changes in real time. This is because distributors, booksellers, and libraries update their information at different times. You may see differences in your book details, content, and pricing on other websites until they update the information.

Manufacturing differences

Paperbacks sold through the Expanded Distribution channels might be manufactured by third parties. There may be minor differences in manufacturing (e.g., paper thickness, color shade, etc.).
