How it works
You can make your new eBooks available for pre-order in Kindle Stores worldwide. Setting a pre-order allows customers to order your eBook as early as one year before its release date. When you're setting up a new eBook, you can choose to make it available for pre-order and set a date in the future. Though your eBook isn't available for download yet, we'll still publish a detail page for it. Customers can order the eBook anytime leading up to the release date you set, and it will be delivered to them on that date.
After you set up a pre-order, you'll see a timer on top of your book's setup pages that keeps track of the deadline to submit the file you'd like delivered to customers. You have until this deadline to make changes to your book, but we encourage you to finish setting up your pre-order early in the event that changes are needed to meet our publishing guidelines.
Eligibility and requirements
- Eligibility. Only new KDP eBooks are eligible for pre-order. We don't currently offer pre-orders for paperbacks, but you can schedule a Release Date. Public domain eBooks aren't eligible for pre-order. You may list up to 10 titles at once for pre-order, with room for more pre-order listings as you release each eBook.
- Submission deadline. You must upload your final manuscript more than 72 hours before the release date. To keep track of the deadline, use the timer at the top of your book's setup pages (details, content, pricing). If you don't upload your manuscript file on time, your pre-order will be canceled, and you won't be able to set up a pre-order for any eBook for one year. The same applies if you cancel the release of your pre-order book.
- Manuscript submission. You have until the submission deadline to upload your manuscript file, but we encourage you to finish setting up your pre-order and upload the final version early in the event changes are needed to meet our publishing guidelines. After the submission deadline, you won't be able to make changes to your book until after the title is released.
- Updates to manuscript and book details. You will not be able to update your manuscript file or book details after the submission deadline (within 72 hours of the release). You can make updates before the submission deadline and after the release. If your manuscript needs revisions and the file size increases, you might have to increase your list price so it meets our requirements.
- List price. Set the list price for your pre-order book based on our list price requirements. You can change your list price during the pre-order period, but if you lower it, we'll retroactively charge that lower price to customers who already pre-ordered your book. If you raise the price during pre-order, all prior customers will pay the lower price. Your royalty will be based on the actual price we charge customers. This doesn't apply to Amazon.de and/or Amazon.in.
Note: Pre-order books listed on Amazon.de are subject to the German fixed book price law. If you increase the price during the pre-order period, all prior orders are canceled. We'll notify customers who bought your book about the new price and provide details for how they can buy the book again.
- KDP Select. You can enroll your pre-order book in KDP Select, and the KDP Select term will begin on the book's release date. Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals can be scheduled only after the book release.
- Review process. Once you finish setting your book for pre-order, it will go through the review process. We review your book to ensure it meets our guidelines.
- If a pre-order book doesn't meet our guidelines, you won't be able to resubmit the same book. Instead, you need to update the manuscript to meet our guidelines and publish it as a new submission.
- If the pre-order meets the guidelines, but we find that information is missing or that updates are required, we will notify you about this, and after you submit the required changes, we will review your updates..
- We encourage you to finish setting up your pre-order early in the event changes are needed to meet these guidelines.
Reporting and royalty
Your pre-order report is updated as orders are placed. This report includes pre-ordered units, pre-order cancellations, and net pre-order units. Your pre-order sales data will not appear in other reports until after your eBook is delivered to customers on its release date. After that, you'll see pre-order units listed in the Prior Months' Royalties report, under the "Pre-order" transaction type. Once your eBook is released and customers start downloading their copies, you'll receive credit for final sales. Learn more about pre-order payment timelines.Royalties are calculated based on the royalty plan you choose. If you chose the 70% plan, your royalty will be:
- 70% of your list price without Value Added Tax (VAT), less delivery costs (average delivery costs are $0.06 per unit sold, and vary by file size), for each eligible book sold to customers in the 70% territories, and 35% of the list price for each unit sold to customers residing outside the 70% territories
- If you choose the 70% royalty plan without uploading the manuscript file you would like delivered to customers, the estimated royalty will reflect delivery cost for a file size of a typical eBook. Delivery cost can change based on the size of your final file. We recommend using the grid on the Kindle eBook Pricing setup page to understand how file size and delivery costs can affect royalties.

Any update to your release date must be made before your submission deadline. Customers who pre-ordered the eBook will receive an email telling them you delayed the release. Important reminders about manuscript submission and deadlines
When you create a pre-order, you will have a submission deadline to upload your book manuscript. This deadline is shown to you while setting up your pre-order, however, you can also go back to your book’s set up page (this page is where you add your book details, content, pricing, etc.) to see a timer at the top of this page that will indicate you how much time you have left for making updates.72 hours prior to your book release, we will start preparing to deliver your book to customers worldwide. During this time, you will not be able to make updates to your manuscript file or your book’s details. You will be able make updates to your book again after the release date.
Note that if you don't upload your manuscript file on time, your pre-order will be canceled and you won't be able to set up a pre-order for any eBook for one year. The same applies if you cancel the release of your pre-order book. This is the why we recommend you to make all updates prior to the submission deadline.
Note: Our Customer Service team is also unable to make changes to your book after the submission deadline. We won’t be able to unlock your book to make additional edits.
